MARYVILLE, Tenn. — A Maryville police officer is still recovering in the hospital after being injured in a crash Friday evening during a motorcade for Vice President JD Vance.

Maryville police said Officer Justin Brown was hurt after he was thrown from his motorcycle when it collided with a Tennessee Highway Patrol cruiser. A Maryville man at the scene played an important role in the aftermath of the crash.

Dan Varady was parked on the side of Lamar Alexander Parkway around 6 p.m. as the motorcade went by.

Varady and his daughter were heading to the store when they came across the motorcade. While watching it pass, he said he saw the crash happen right in front of him.

Varady said he immediately ran to Officer Brown’s side.
