Police in the New South Wales Hunter region are investigating the alleged attempted sexual assault of an elderly woman by a teenage boy.

Police said the woman was walking in Brooklyn Park, between Kilkenny Circuit and Chelmsford Drive, at Ashtonfield at about 7:20pm on Monday when she was knocked to the ground by a male.

It is alleged he then tried to sexually assault her, before leaving on a push scooter.

The woman contacted a family member who then alerted police.

She was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said the male was described as aged in his mid-to-late teens, with a dark complexion and was wearing a black T-shirt and black shorts.

Local detectives have launched Strike Force Bosgar with the help of State Crime Command's Sex Crime Squad.
