CLEVELAND, Ohio - A North Olmsted man faces murder charges after his wife died from a gunshot wound to the stomach on Friday.
Joseph Halpin, 42, was arraigned Monday in Rocky River Municipal Court in the death of Laura Hoopengardner, 39, at their home at 31376 Lorain Road.
The office of the Cuyahoga County medical examiner released Hoopengardner’s identity Monday.
On Friday, Halpin called 911 to report that Hoopengardner had suffered a gunshot wound to her lower abdomen. In a 911 call obtained from police by WKYC, Halpin told dispatchers that he “cocked the gun, and it went off in her.”
When police arrived at the scene, Halpin attempted to turn the gun on himself, but the weapon did not discharge. He was arrested.
