Blantyre — The fate of former Deputy Inspector General of Police Ackis Muwanga will be determined today as Senior Resident Magistrate Asunta Maxwell is expected to rule on his bail application in Blantyre.
Muwanga, together with Superintendent Laudon Nthinda, has been in custody at Chichiri Prison on remand. The two senior police officers are facing charges of money laundering, abuse of office, and extortion.
During previous court appearances, the defence asked the court to grant bail, arguing that the accused officials are not flight risks and will cooperate with investigators. However, state prosecutors insisted that releasing them could jeopardise ongoing investigations and potentially influence witnesses.
