Some hunters give wild turkeys five stars for Thanksgiving dinner
Wild turkeys have made a great comeback in Rhode Island. They're frequently spotted pecking for food in front yards, holding up traffic as they cross streets , or even staking out drive-throughs for easy snacks. But with Thanksgiving on the near horizon , you'd think they'd sense the danger and keep a lower profile.
Do they have anything to be afraid of? Does anyone in the Ocean State hunt the bold birds and serve them for their own inexpensive Thanksgiving dinners? It's not common, but we found a few hunters who've dined on the wild birds at Thanksgiving and on other occasions, and they give the meal five stars.
"It was delicious," said Elizabeth "Lizzi" Bonczek, who served wild turkey for Thanksgiving in 2023.
