New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of leading Spain at the Davis Cup Finals have been cut short after the World No.1 pulled out with a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old arrived in Bologna earlier this week after losing to Sinner in the ATP Finals to join Spain’s training camp. He was advised by doctors not to compete after medical tests revealed swelling and a muscle strain in his right hamstring.

Alcaraz admitted the decision left him devastated. In a message shared by him on his Instagram, he wrote “I’m so sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play for Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna. I have an edema in my right hamstring and the medical recommendation is not to compete. Alcaraz said he was returning home “heartbroken.”
