A former St. Olaf College student has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for attacking his ex-girlfriend with a knife and hammer on the Northfield campus, which also left three other students injured.

William Davis Schulenberg, 23, of Chanhassen, was sentenced in Rice County Monday after pleading guilty last month to four counts of assault, including assault causing great bodily harm and assault with a deadly weapon, in connection with the May 1, 2022 attack.

Schulenberg climbed through a window of Ytterboe Hall shortly after midnight with a hammer in one hand and a hunting knife in the other, and struck his ex, a then-19-year-old woman, in the head multiple times with a hammer, and pushed a knife into her neck.
