PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Pit bulls are finally welcome in Prince George's County, after a 27-year-long ban of the breed and similar dogs was lifted Tuesday afternoon.
The county council amended the animal control code Tuesday to allow pit bull-type dogs to be adopted by county residents. The ban made many dogs "unadoptable" at Prince George's County Animal Shelter for decades, leading to severe overcrowding and leaving the animals stuck in the shelter. At first, they weren't even allowed outside. Over the years, the shelter began to letting staff work with the dogs, and finally, in 2023, out-of-county adoption was allowed.
Finally, thanks to Tuesday's animal control code changes, these dogs can stay in Prince George's County.
"Today marks a monumental step forward for our county.
