FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Residents are being asked to shelter in place after a chemical spill southeast of downtown Fort Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.
A public safety alert was sent out just before 2 p.m., warning people near the 700 block of Hayden Street to stay inside. Residents are asked to keep their windows closed as crews work to address the spill.
The spill, at Webb Chemical Warehouse, 702 Hayden St., was of 350 gallons of nitric acid. A Fort Wayne Fire Department official at the scene said some of the spill went into sewage and they are working to get it sucked out.
The spill led to a cloud of fumes that the fire official says they are concerned could cause respiratory issues.
The street is closed, and motorists should avoid the area. It could be closed for several hours.
