COLUMBIA — The city of Columbia Solid Waste Utility announced Tuesday that it will start recycling mixed fibers, including cardboard, when possible.
The Solid Waste Utility has been taking mixed fibers to the landfill since an EF1 tornado destroyed the city's recycling sorting facility in the spring, disrupting the recycling process.
Now, the city will start diverting mixed fibers for both commercial and residential customers as weather conditions allow, according to an update posted Tuesday to the Solid Waste Utility's recycling information page .
The Solid Waste Utility's goal is to collect the material curbside and bale it the same day. Weather conditions such as wind or rain will affect the recyclability of the materials and the city's ability to bale the material, according to
