A once-thriving shoreline landmark is making way for a luxury-residence development on West Haven's Beach Street.

Demolition crews began tearing down the Debonair Beach Motel on Tuesday after developers received final approval from West Haven’s Building Department.

Built in 1959, the motel was once a thriving waterfront destination — but longtime residents say its decline has been evident.

“My early impression, because I’ve lived in this area for over 21 years, it was in much better repair,” West Haven resident Rich Hebert said. “The last 21 years it fell into disrepair and it’s had a lot of problems.”

The aging motel will soon be replaced by a four-story luxury development featuring 30 upscale two-bedroom residen
