WAHPETON, Iowa (KTIV) — Dredging is now underway at Turtle Lake near Wahpeton as part of a major water restoration project on the Iowa Great Lakes.
The long-anticipated dredging of Turtle Lake is removing thousands of cubic yards of sediment.
“We have a main barge out here, it is digging. It is filling up hopper barges that are basically floating truck beds,” said Douglas Harper, director of operations for Superior Seawall & Docks.
The two hopper barges rotate back and forth keeping the excavator working.
“A second excavator on the shore loads up the material, the silt onto seal gate trucks. It is taken about four and a half miles away and is disposed of,” Harper said.
