Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita’s quick visit to Fort Wayne last week was billed as a simple information-gathering trip to Catholic Charities of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese and Amani Family Services.
Simple, that is, in the way only a press conference with cameras, microphones and loaded insinuations can be, suggesting that two trusted organizations might somehow be caught up in human trafficking.
Weaponizing insinuation is an eons-old tactic. From Cicero to Nixon, the playbook is simple: cast a specter and watch it creep. Rokita singled out two respected nonprofits and treated them like stage props in a tough-on-immigration performance meant to generate good ink.
And before anyone says it, there is no smoke here, much less a fire.
