In the wake of the worsening air pollution in Delhi, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to issue directions advising that sports activities in schools should be shifted to pollution-safe months. The court observed that allowing such activities during November and December, when the pollution levels are at their peak, "amounts to putting school children in a gas chamber".
The Chief Justice of India-led bench's direction came after the amicus informed the court that the Delhi government has scheduled inter-zonal sports competitions for under-16 and under-14 students during the two months when the air quality is at its worst. - Ends
