The federal government has started to contact Pacific leaders to canvass a COP31 "Plan B" that would see Adelaide abandon its bid for the global United Nations climate summit so long as Pacific nations are guaranteed a role in next year's conference.
A decision on hosting rights for the world's most significant climate conference is due by the end of this week, when this year's conference in the Brazilian city of Belem draws to a close.
The government has been locked in a months-long stand-off over the conference with Türkiye, which has refused to revoke its rival bid despite widespread support for an event hosted in Australia in "partnership" with Pacific nations.
