CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Amid the ongoing Customs and Border Protection operation in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County leaders showed support for the immigrant community.
County commissioners passed a resolution Tuesday night that supports the immigrant community and calls for CBP and ICE to notify the county about any arrests.
The resolution was unanimously approved after commissioners first announced their plan to adopt it Friday.
It states the immigrant population has grown by more than 126% since 2000. Leaders say about 150,000 people who live in Mecklenburg County are immigrants.
Local government and law enforcement officials lack the authority to intervene in federal immigration operations, so the resolution is more of a symbolic measure.
