Kentucky's largest school system should be one step closer to a balanced budget, thanks to the hiring of an accounting firm tasked with helping reduce the district's massive budget deficit .

During a Nov. 18 meeting, Jefferson County Board of Education members approved a contract with Alvarez & Marsal Public Sector Services , a firm that will conduct an audit of the district's finances in order to inform decisions surrounding the next budget, which is set to be presented at the end of January.
