MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont officially has a new Kid Governor. Roslyn Fortin, a fifth grader from Highgate Elementary School, was Tuesday’s winner.

The Vermont Secretary of State’s Office launched the initiative to boost youth civic engagement after recent data showed many young people were disengaged with the voting process.

What started with 1,000 interested students turned into seven on the final ballot this week.

Fortin’s platform of addressing homelessness includes a three-point action plan. First, to start donation drives with bins at schools. Second, to promote fun runs to raise money for shelters. And third, to organize community potlucks for people experiencing homelessness.
