Trouble erupted on a London-bound train from the Midlands today, when a passenger was said to have hurled hot water at staff and tried attacking them with a fire extinguisher.

The violence took place on the 4.40am East Midlands Railway service from Derby to London St Pancras.

It was believed a man had been travelling without a ticket when he became aggressive and began shouting, according to the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) union.

The man then ran to the galley and threw hot water at staff, before trying to launch an attack with a fire extinguisher.
