America’s most-popular cat names for 2025 have been revealed.

Cat names matter, not least to the cats themselves. In 2019, a study published in Scientific Reports found cats were even capable of recognizing their own name.

As part of the experiment, researchers played a voice saying four different words, followed by the cat’s name . Each was said in the same intonation with the cat’s response carefully monitored on video.

While the cats rarely did more than twitch an ear or move their heads, using a four-point scale, researchers saw proof that they could tell their name apart from the other words.
