There were qualms and questions about Michigan football's defense just a month ago.

The Wolverines left sunny Southern California in mid-October with a cloudy outlook after USC gashed and gutted U-M's normally stout resistance for nearly 500 total yards – 224 on the ground and 265 in the air. There were missed tackles, poor angles, bad communication and, in general, a sloppiness from the unit unseen in years.
