KINGSTON, N.Y. — HealthAlliance Hospital welcomed a new da Vinci robotic surgical system on Wednesday, the first of its kind in Ulster County.
The system, described by hospital officials as “state-of-the-art,” is designed for minimally invasive procedures. The system is operated by a surgeon, who uses controls while seated at a surgical console to maneuver the robot’s arms.
It will primarily be used in general surgery, urology, gynecology, thoracic surgery, surgical oncology, and colorectal surgery.
The da Vinci system, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, was first cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for surgical use in 2000.
