Former Cleveland State men’s basketball coach Kevin Mackey, who led his team to a historic NCAA Tournament upset over Bob Knight and Indiana, has died. He was 80 years old.
Mackey was the head coach of the first “Cinderella” team in the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN . No. 14 seed Cleveland State upset No. 3 seed Indiana in the 1986 tourney, before knocking off Saint Joseph’s in the second round to reach the Sweet 16.
The Vikings eventually lost to David Robinson and Navy with a spot in the Elite 8 on the line but not before making history.
Kevin Mackey was at Cleveland State from 1983-90, compiling an impressive 142-69 record.
