RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - A Richmond woman pled guilty on Tues. Nov. 18, to wire fraud in connection with the operation of a homeless shelter.
According to court documents, Kia A. Player, 41, used money won in a grant to fabricate and falsify at least 35 separate invoices for costs purportedly paid for the benefit of RVA Sister’s Keeper and its homeless residents.
The grant money given to Player was originally for RVA Sister’s Keeper, a homeless organization focused on servicing women and children.
The organization received over $995,000 in governmental funding from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the City of Richmond to open.
Player’s invoice scheme caused $199,163 in losses to the city of Richmond between August 2022 and April 2023.
