China has notified Tokyo that it will suspend all imports of Japanese seafood and issued a travel advisory for the country amid its disagreements over the status of Taiwan.

The development follows comments by Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, stating that a Chinese attempt to seize Taiwan by force would constitute a ‘survival-threatening situation’ for Japan, prompting strong reactions from China.

“If there are battleships and the use of force, no matter how you think about it, it could constitute a survival-threatening situation,” Takaichi said.

Japan's 2015 security law defines a ‘survival-threatening situation’ as one in which an armed attack on its allies poses an existential threat to Japan. In such cases, Japan's self-defence forces can be activated to counter the threat.
