Sea lion image near Powell River one of National Geographic's Pictures of the Year

An image taken 90 kilometres northwest of Vancouver has been named one of the best National Geographic pictures of 2025.

The picture, created by National Geographic photographer Stephen Wilkes, is of a colony of Steller sea lions on McRae Islet in Malaspina Strait, just south of Powell River.
