PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A popular west Phoenix mall is closed after suffering roof damage that caused flooding for several shops and businesses within the complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire officials were called out to the area of 75th Avenue and Thomas Road around 5:30 p.m. after the drop ceiling collapsed at a dental office, causing a water line to be cut.
According to Phoenix Fire Capt. Todd Keller, staff members, patients, and mallgoers were then evacuated due to safety concerns, including a broken fire suppression system and flooding.
Arizona’s Family spoke with employees at a mall business who said a strong round of rain and hail started falling shortly before the roof was damaged. However, officials didn’t confirm that this was directly caused by the weather.
