GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - 300 turkeys and 50 hams were for the taking Wednesday afternoon for the fourth annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

The food drive, started by the Derick Hall One Percent Foundation, was created to help combat food insecurity. After a record-breaking 43 day government shutdown left families without food assistance programs, events like this are vital to the community.

Derick Hall’s mom and president of the foundation Stacy Crandle said the holidays mean familial love to them, and this is their way of giving back.

“We don’t want families to be worried about getting around the table this Thanksgiving.” Crandle said “So, that’s what this food drive is for just to one help combat food insecurities but do it at an important time of the year, around the holidays.”
