CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — Clay County educators and school board members remain at odds over teacher pay following a special legislative hearing Wednesday that ended with the school board unanimously adopting the district’s budget proposal.

Dozens of educators filled the hearing room holding signs reading “shame” and “A district, F pay,” with some booing after the board’s vote.

"I certainly don’t want to leave where I’ve been, but passion does not pay my mortgage," one educator, Susan Ford-Hudson, said.

"My Clay County student has stopped asking for even basic items, like toiletries, because she knows that in a two-teacher household, we may not be able to afford them," another teacher said.
