A BBC expert has warned that Donald Trump’s alleged new peace plan with Russia would allow Vladimir Putin to declare “victory” in his war against Ukraine .

Outlets including Axios , Reuters and the Financial Times have reported that Trump and Russia have drawn up a plan declaring that Ukraine should give up land and weapons, while also taking a cut to its military.

If accurate, this would be crossing a major red line for Ukraine, as Kyiv has refused to willingly give up any land to Putin since the war began.

The BBC’s Russia editor Steve Rosenberg told Radio 4′s Today programme: “The Ukrainians would be right to see this as a capitulation to Russian demands.

“And I think Putin would be able to present this quite credibly as a victory, if it were to go ahead.”
