Parents of the five Smithfield football players accused of hazing a freshman team member in late September have filed a complaint with the Rhode Island Department of Education , offering a glimpse into what happened behind the scenes after a punishment was meted out and then rescinded.

Smithfield has been embroiled in controversy after criticisms of hazing and antisemitism from Rhode Island Jewish organizations , who spoke with the mother of a freshman football player. An investigation is currently underway involving both the School Department and Rhode Island attorney general's office into the handling of the incident.
