A Connecticut man who police say tried to outrun officers crashed into a car with children inside in West Hartford earlier this week, authorities said.

Julio E. Colon, 27, of Hartford, is charged with engaging police in a pursuit, second-degree reckless endangerment, evading responsibility, interfering with police, misuse of plates, illegal tints, and other infractions, West Hartford police said.

Police initially tried to pull Colon over near Exit 43 on I-84 west for a traffic infraction around 5:23 p.m. Monday, but he sped away without stopping, West Hartford police said. Officers did not pick up the chase.

However, West Hartford police said they spotted his vehicle driving through town soon after and used a tire deflation device to pop his tires.

Colon then crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Kane Street and Prospect Avenue. Police said the children in the car he struck were taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.

Colon was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Colon is being held on a $75,000 bond, authorities said.
