People who legally migrate to the UK won’t be able to claim benefits or social housing until they get British citizenship – while some will have to wait up to 20 years before getting indefinite leave to remain.

The measures were outlined by the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood – who said residing permanently in the UK was not a right but a privilege, which had to be earned.

That’s alarmed some campaigners who said it would trap people in decades of instability and stress.
