CHAPIN, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said it has started an investigation into newly elected Chapin Mayor Bill Mitchell Jr. over an incident from earlier this month.

SLED confirmed to News19 that they were requested by Chapin Police to investigate an alleged assault involving Mitchell at Chapin Town Hall on November 7. That was three days after he was elected.

SLED did not confirm any further details of the nature of the allegation, but said their investigation is active and ongoing at this time.

In the November 4 municipal election, Mitchell received 68 percent of the vote.

Mitchell replaced Mayor Al Koon, who passed away earlier this fall. Koon had filed to run for re-election and his name still appeared on the ballot. However, election officials told News19
