PEMBROKE — After just one game of his second season leading the Rams, Mike Smith was relieved of his duties as Purnell Swett girls basketball head coach, he announced Thursday in a social media post.
Smith coached Purnell Swett (0-1) in its season opener Tuesday at Fairmont, a 58-26 loss, to begin his second season leading the team. Purnell Swett was 5-20 last season.
“I did not resign, the decision was made for me,” Smith told The Robesonian Thursday afternoon. “I don’t really know what’s going on. I had taken a day off … and I got called in. Apparently a parent had a problem with a practice.”
Smith said he hadn’t previously had any employee conduct issues, and that he doesn’t even have have any technical fouls as head coach.
