Justice Gavai attended his farewell program at the Supreme Court on Thursday
Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, speaking at his farewell ceremony hosted by the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association on Thursday, said he identifies as a follower of Buddhism but remains "truly secular," respecting all religions including Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam.
He credited his father, an admirer of Dr. BR Ambedkar, for shaping his values and teaching him to honour every faith.
CJI Gavai shared childhood memories of accompanying his father to political events, where visits to dargahs and gurdwaras were common. "I grew up in an environment of respecting all religions," he said.
Friday marks Justice Gavai’s final working day in the Supreme Court ahead of his retirement on November 23.
