WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Wichita Police Department is implementing new technology to help the community with real-time translation powered by artificial intelligence.

Police body cameras can now translate more than 50 languages using AI technology from Axon.

“We can tell the camera what languages we want it to translate or we can tell it to auto-detect and then the individual can speak and it will detect that language and translate it for us,” said WPD Officer Tim Baird.

Police are testing the program with 65 officers. They say they are already seeing results.

Early results show promise

“Allows us to get preliminary information that made be needed for safety or security purposes, to know if there is any danger on scene still or if anybody needs medical attention,” Baird said.
