WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Dozens turned out for a community transgender day of remembrance at Wilkes University.
Local organizers and community members gathered to honor the lives of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people who died by violence in the United States this past year.
Organizers say the event is a safe space to grieve and find community.
"I think the visibility is helpful and just seeing, seeing the support and seeing, you know, that there are people who are here and who care and who are safe to be able to come out to and be yourself around," said Nikki Berlew, organizer.
This is the third year the event has been held here on Wilkes University's campus.
