PENNSYLVANIA, USA — It's no secret that buying a house now is a lot harder than it used to be 50 years ago.

U.S. Census data shows the national median cost of a house in 1965 was $20,000, and when you take inflation into account, that would be $200,000 today.

But the national median cost of a house today is $420,000, double what it was 50 years ago.

That's why folks are buying homes at a later age now.

"The median age is about 40 now to purchase a home, compared to years ago, it was a little younger,” said Katherine Bennett, a realtor at REMAX Crossroads.

To try to combat the rising cost of housing, the Trump administration is considering a policy that gives folks the option to extend the length of an average mortgage from 30 years to 50. But Bennett said there are pros and cons.
