The banged-up Toronto Maple Leafs came up short in overtime on Thursday as Adam Fantilli scored his second goal of the game to carry the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-2 victory.

There were some glimmers of hope on the injury front Thursday, with Auston Matthews back on the ice at the Maple Leafs’ morning skate.

“He was shooting the puck pretty well,” offered head coach Craig Berube afterward, without giving a timetable for his captain’s return from the lower-body malady that has kept him out the past four games.

And while there was no greater clarity on goaltender Anthony Stolarz – “Obviously worse than we thought,” Berube said – the Leafs did get bottom-six centre
