Kolkata and several areas in Northeast India experienced strong tremors on Friday morning due to an earthquake near Dhaka, Bangladesh. The earthquake, initially reported at a magnitude of 5.7 by the US Geological Survey (USGS), struck at 10:08 am, with its epicentre located 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi, Bangladesh, at a depth of 10 km.
Residents in Kolkata reported feeling the tremors around 10:10 am, which lasted only a few seconds. Many people rushed out of their homes as a precaution. Similar tremors were felt in other parts of West Bengal, including Cooch Behar, Malda, and Nadia, as well as in cities like Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong.
Despite the intensity of the tremors, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The earthquake also briefly interrupted a Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka, but the game resumed shortly after with no reported issues.
