An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 struck near the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Friday, with tremors being felt in Kolkata and several parts of Northeast India, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicentre was situated in Narsingdi, about 50 km from Dhaka and the depth of the quake was 10 km, the USGS said. No reports of damage, casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

In Kolkata, people experienced tremors around 10:10 am for a few seconds. Tremors were also felt in other parts of West Bengal, including Cooch Behar and Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur.

Several residents also reported feeling tremors in cities such as Guwahati, Agartala and Shillong.
