Many taxpayers are still waiting for their income-tax refunds for AY 2025-26, even though non-audit returns were filed by September 16. Expectations of early payouts have been tempered as the Income Tax Department steps up checks on certain filings.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has indicated that most pending refunds are likely to be released by December 2025.
CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal said the department is conducting a detailed review of cases where high-value refund claims or unusual deductions were flagged by the system.
“We have analysed and found that some wrong refunds or deductions were being claimed,” Agrawal was quoted as saying in a PTI report.
He added that taxpayers have been advised to file revised returns wherever necessary.
