The US Coast Guard is facing a political storm after a Washington Post report claimed the service will no longer classify the Swastika as a hate symbol, instead downgrading it to potentially divisive under a new policy expected to take effect December 15. The Post reported that the same downgrade would apply to nooses and the Confederate flag, though the flag’s display would still be banned.
The Post, citing documents it reviewed, said the policy shift comes as the Coast Guard aligns itself with the Trump administration’s tightening review of harassment and hazing standards across the military. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had earlier ordered a rewrite of Pentagon rules he argued had grown too broad and risked undermining combat readiness.
