When he was selected third overall by the Soo Greyhounds in 2001, he knew only what every young hockey player from southern Ontario knew about Sault Ste. Marie: it was far, it was cold, and it was definitely not London. Article content Article content

“I didn’t know anything about the Sault,” Carter told The Sault Star. “It was the furthest away from home that I could possibly get.”

That uncertainty was familiar to someone who knew the feeling firsthand.
