The opener of the Ashes 2025-26 series between Australia and England down under got underway on Friday in a rather unexpected fashion as a total of 19 wickets fell on the first day of the first Test in Perth.
The last time 18 or more wickets fell on the opening day of an Ashes Test was back in the year 1909 at Old Trafford when Australia were bundled out for 147 and England for 119.
The carnage proved to be the most active day in terms of wickets for bowlers on opening day at the Perth, surpassing the combined 17 wickets Australia and India lost in 2024, and the most wickets to fall on the opening day of an Ashes Test in the last 100 years overtaking the fall of 17-wicket at the Lord’s in 2005 and Trent Bridge in 2001.
