Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has praised and memorialized coal miner Steven M. Lipscomb, who was a Marine Corps combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

Lipscomb, 42, died Nov. 8 at the Rolling Thunder Mine in Nicholas County. Rescue crews found his body five days later. Lipscomb was last seen trying to ensure his crew made it out of the mine safely after it flooded according to Alpha Metallurgical Resources Inc., which controls the mine. Energy and Environment
