NEW CITY – It has been over five years since fire raged through the Evergreen Nursing Home in Spring Valley, claiming the lives of Firefighter Jared Lloyd and resident Oliver Heuston, yet the remnants of the burned-out facility remained as a reminder of the tragedy.
Rockland County has now secured $718,000 in civil penalties from the owners – SPJJ LLC, for failure to clean up and secure the site.
“For the property owner to then leave the site as a never-ending reminder and eyesore of that tragedy was simply unacceptable,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
The county obtained a court injunction ordering the landlord to clean and secure the property, which was ignored resulting in fines accumulating and a judgment placed against the property.
The court also issued a $36,000 contempt
