Sarnia’s Salvation Army needs help building a big pile of toys, to help people in need this Christmas.

Operation Christmas Mountain – A Toy Drive Challenge started Thursday outside the Toys R Us in Lambton Mall.

A few dozen gifts Thursday were forming the base of what Capt. Brad Webster said he hopes will be a collection of thousands of toys by this weekend.

The need is greater than ever, he said.

Applications opened for food and toy Christmas hampers Tuesday, and there were 75 applications within three hours, he said.

Last year, nearly 700 households received hampers, he said.

“This year we anticipate even more.”

Applications close Nov. 28, he said.
