The U.S. tourism industry has been experiencing what experts call the "Trump slump" since President Trump's first term. As early as February 2017, the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) estimated that the American travel sector had already lost $185 million in revenue since Trump's election. The industry, however, saw some recovery under the Biden administration.
During that period, international visitor arrivals grew from 19.2 million in 2020 to 72.4 million in 2024 . Tourist spending even went up to $178.5 billion , which was an impressive surge from pandemic rates. Still, the U.S. did not fully return to its 2019 levels of international visitors.
